“From the very moment we knew of its location, we wanted something from the place to inform the design, the artistic direction, and so forth. We are constantly inspired by Terengganu’s local arts, which are vested in their incredibly beautiful village fishermen’s boat building heritage, partly because of the way they work with the wood, and also partly because of the extraordinary precision found inside the curved forms of the ribs.
We wanted the restaurant to reconnect to something from the region, and it was obviously the fishing and boat building art forms that first caught our imagination. It was so that the design has elements belonging very much to the genius loci of the village, not something we could simply pluck from the air; we didn’t want anything to just suddenly come out of the woods…” huatlim
