ceiling geometry

The ceiling geometry echoes almost exactly the aesthetics of the keel of a boat, albeit with some modernity. True to the older tradition of boat building, we have kept the workmanship to its finest, and we have also refrained from adding too much colour and frivolous decoration to what is already a work of art with regards to working in wood, however simple its representation.

Some images of the screens with individually crafted bowed arches, echoing the simple aesthetics of Terengganu’s boat building tradition. In plan, they form a visually continuous sweep of curves running the entire depth of the restaurant.

This is a detail of the ribbing pattern of our partition wall of the restaurant, echoing the curved shaped of Terengganu “sampans” or fisherman boats, made entirely by hand to this day and laminated carefully to emulate the same intricate and sophisticated detail that goes into making these wonderful traditional water crafts of this eastern state of Peninsula Malaysia.

Although limited in design ‘moderations’, we have kept most of the geometry to its simplest form with strong references to the architecture of the boat industry prevalent in this ‘eroded’ part of the world, being the lamination and the craftsmanship that is required to achieve the final result.

bell lights

The main corridors leading to the dining rooms of the restaurant are lit entirely using large diameter bell lights, soft circular shaped fabric drums hung below the recessed ceiling. Each bell-light unit comprises of three incandescent fixtures featuring a warm glow following closely the curved walkway. The circularity of these units echo and coincide with the curvilinear edge of the perimeter detail of the ceiling panels on either side of the walkway. The shadows cast on the floor slab simply create the soft divide between public realm and the private clusters and pockets of the adjoining dining rooms demarcated also by bespoke wooden screens.
